October 2006 Progress:

It's My Park! Day October 2006 was a huge success. Thank you to all our volunteers for running the information table and helping out with the park activities. And a big warm welcome to our new members who signed up to join SPDOG. Please tune in to this web site frequently to learn about our upcoming activities and volunteer opportunities.

May 2005 Progress:

On March 8, we had our second hearing with the community board's parks committee. Our new proposed space on the 44th Street side was largely met with approval by those in attendance as well as the committee members.

Due to inclement weather, however, the meeting was under-attended by the community, especially those residents on 44th Street who might be most affected by the proposed run. Furthermore, it seemed that many of the salient points made at our first parks committee meeting were forgotten in the months that followed. Thus, a third meeting (the squeaky gate gets the oil, my friends!) with the parks committee will be scheduled, and we are to provide a short FAQ sheet outlining the most important community concerns, i.e., cleanup, safety, and noise control, etc.

The SPDOG steering committee will be meeting to put together these materials as well as attend to some organizational matters in the near future. We will also be scheduling larger meetings/cleanups for the whole SPDOG community now that spring has finally sprung! Look for scheduled events on the web site.

October 2004 Progress:

SPDOG had their first annual K-9 Costume Parade! Despite less than perfect weather, we had a decent crowd. Children and dogs were dressed in their Halloween finest to parade around the park. Thanks to everyone who braved the weather and made this a fun day to get to know each other a little better and eat candy.

September 2004 Progress:

We we're pleased to see some more people at the last community board meeting where the prospect of the dog run was discussed again with the parks committee.

We also ran into some opposition.
A representative of 26 co-op owners facing the 41st street side of the park came to voice his opposition to the proposed dog run.

Their concerns were:
- Noise pollution,
- Degradation of the lawn,
- And his opinion that an influx of dogs would pose a greater threat to park go-ers and children.

Of course things will not be as noisy as they fear ("50 dogs socializing" was his quote) and the degradation of the lawn is inevitable but directly related to the size of the run. The danger is a relatively unfounded fear that is common amongst non dog owners. Also, their opposition is only towards the space facing their property. After Desiree had a walk through with some of the parks department, they are not willing to give us a bordering space as a concern to these very neighbors. The parks department, not the community board, has the final say in regards to space.

June 2004 Progress:

SPDOG will meet with the Parks Committee of Community Board 7 in July to discuss the request for a dog run in Sunset Park. Once we get approval from the Community Board (keep our fingers crossed), we will need to get approval from the City Parks Department before we can get a legal dog run in Sunset Park.

Poop Bag holders have been installed around Sunset Park in five locations. Please help keep the park clean and pick up after your dog. Let’s also try and keep the bag holders full—Purge your cupboards and bring your extra grocery bags to the park!

May 2004 Progress:

We took our first big step toward getting a dog run approved in Sunset Park. Trudy, Steve and Desiree attended the Community Board 7 meeting where they requested a letter of support from the board. Our proposal with other materials is to be looked over by the parks committee of the board. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

After the meeting we were approached by reporters from
the Sunset News, and the World Journal(the largest Chinese Daily newspaper in North America). So keep a lookout for SPDOG in the press!

Coming Soon:
Look for poop bag holders appearing in Sunset Park.
Donate your plastic bags to keep them stocked.
