What is a Dog
Run?
A dog run is an enclosed area where dogs
are free to run and play off-leash, in turn they do not disturb
other users of the park.
Benefits
of a Dog Run - Taken
from UrbanHound.com
1) Giving dogs their own place to play means
they're less likely to disturb other users of the park;
2) Adequate off-leash play and exercise
helps make dogs better neighbors. A dog that gets plenty of
exercise is less likely to bark incessantly or jump on people;
3) Dog runs bring people together, create
a sense of community, and provide a forum for dog owners to
share information that can help foster more responsible pet
ownership. That in turn makes dog owners better neighbors;
4) Encouraging dog owners and their dogs
to use the parks regularly (as dog runs do) helps deter crime
in and around parks.
New York City Pets Interviews Desiree Leary,
SPDOG Steering Committee President
Q: Dog runs
don't grow on trees, do they? A lot of effort must go into
creating the organization and getting approval. How long have
you been working toward a run for Sunset Park?
A: We
have been petitioning since Spring 2003, and we have been
volunteering with the Parks Dept since Fall 2003. We are trying
to show the Parks Dept that we are dedicated to cleaning up
the park and neighborhood. We are also working to create responsible
dog owners, through passing out information at local pet stores
and park events. We hope to get a dog run proposal completed
this spring.
